Glenwood Springs: An Oasis of Adventure and Tranquility

Glenwood Springs, Colorado, is an adventure seeker’s paradise nestled in the heart of the Rocky Mountains. This vibrant city is a historic resort town known for its natural hot springs, outdoor recreation, and scenic beauty. It is located at the confluence of the Colorado and Roaring Fork Rivers, offering a mix of relaxation and adventure opportunities for all ages and interests.

Hanging Lake is a stunning and unique natural landmark located in Glenwood Canyon, Colorado, east of Glenwood Springs. It’s famous for its strikingly turquoise waters, cascading waterfalls, and the fascinating geological formations that make it appear to be “hanging” from the cliffs. Getting to this wonder will require a reserved ahead of time permit, along with a 2.4 mile strenuous hike with an elevation gain of 1,020 feet, but the site is well worth it.

Glenwood Springs is known for its natural hot mineral springs and offers several attractions built around these geothermal wonders. The most popular being found at the Glenwood Springs Hot Springs Resort, boasting to have the world‘s largest mineral hot springs pool ranging from 90-93 degrees year round. Along with having the world‘s largest mineral hot spring pool, the resort also has a therapy pool (that includes massage chairs) that is cooled to 104 degrees, that is akin to a large hot tub. Another unique water feature is the Shoshone Chutes, which is a lazy river of sorts, only more exciting with rapids. Recently added was the Yampa Mineral Baths that include five new pools offering therapeutic benefits in each. You don’t have to stay at the resort to enjoy these benefits as they offer a pool day pass that grants you access the entire day and allowing you to come and go, allowing for a more cost savings. So feel free to start your day with a soak in the hot spring, then again that evening after a day’s worth of hiking.

Perched high on the mountain above Glenwood Springs is Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park, which is a must visit for adrenaline junkies. Catch the gondola at the base of the mountain to the park above where you can feed your adrenaline or take in the beauty of the canyon below. The park features a variety of rides, including the Cliffhanger Rollercoaster that literally goes off the side of the mountain, the Giant Canyon Swing, and the Glenwood Canyon Flyer. Make sure to bring your camera and your courage for a visit to this Adventure Park!

Glenwood Springs is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts, with numerous hiking and biking trails. As mentioned earlier, the iconic Hanging Lake trail offers stunning views of a waterfall and turquoise lake… but that’s not the only trail. Accessed right in town, you can hike to Doc Holliday’s grave and pay your respects to the legendary gunslinger at his final resting place in Glenwood Springs. If two wheels is more of your thing, the Rio Grande Trail offers a scenic path along the Roaring Fork River that is perfect for biking.

Explore the dramatic Glenwood Canyon by boat or kayak, taking in the towering cliffs in the towering cliffs and Colorado River. Experience the thrill of navigating the Roaring Fork and Colorado Rivers with a guided rafting tour. But be prepared this water isn’t as warm as the hot springs.

Glenwood Springs has an array of activities and adventures for anyone but a little bit of planning and research is recommended. Here are a few tips for planning your adventure.

Altitude

Sitting right at an elevation of 5,761 feet, Glenwood Springs is high above sea-level. Take it easy on your first day and stay well hydrated to avoid any altitude sickness that may occur.

Weather

Be prepared for fluctuating mountain weather. Pack layers and be ready for sunshine, rain, or even snow, regardless of the season. Make sure to have sunglasses, a sun hat, and sunscreen as well.

Reservations

Some activities like Hanging Lake Trail require reservations or a permit, so make sure to book in advance to secure your spot. Nothing is as disappointing as wanting to hike your bucket list trail and being turned away because you didn’t reserve ahead of time.
