Hanging Lake: Colorado’s Hidden Turquoise Treasure

Nestled in the Glenwood Canyon of Colorado, Hanging Lake Trail, a National Natural Landmark, isn’t just a hike. It’s a journey. It’s an experience. It’s an adventure to a vibrant, turquoise paradise seemingly suspended on the side of a mountain. This hike is worth planning a weekend trip to Colorado just to experience the breathtaking beauty.

So why call this gorgeous lake, Hanging Lake, when there are so many other words to describe it? The name lies in the lake’s incredible geological formation. Centuries ago, a geological fault caused a segment of the Earth to drop, and over time, minerals spilling over the edge solidified into a delicate travertine deposit that formed the breathtaking turquoise pool we see today. Those vibrant turquoise hues of the lake are thanks to the constant mineral deposits carried by Bridal Veil Falls, which feeds the lake.

This beauty doesn’t come without work. Be prepared for a moderate to strenuous hike. The trail stretches approximately 1.2 miles one way. However, don’t let that distance fool you, with an elevation gain of around 1200 feet, you will be navigating a series of rocky steps, switchbacks, and crossing seven bridges over Dead Horse Creek. There is literally an AED posted along the trail. It’s definitely a workout, but every step brings you closer to the unparalleled beauty at the top. Hanging Lake is definitely a must see.

After you take in all that Hanging Lake has to offer, don’t miss this additional trail to Spouting Rock. Spouting Rock is a unique waterfall that spews from beneath a rock ledge and into Hanging Lake. Visitors can walk behind the falls and experience the cool air and mist. Sometimes there is even two separate falls visible. At about 100 yards, the spur trail to this cliffside cascade starts just before the boardwalk around Hanging Lake, making it a must do add on.

Planning is mandatory for this hike, as there are so many factors that go into it.

Permits Are Mandatory.

A permit system is in place to protect the delicate ecosystem. You will need to purchase your permit online in advance at www.visitglenwood.com. The cost currently is $12 per person between May and October and $10 per person between November and April.

Timing Is Key.

Consider hiking early to mid morning to avoid crowds, especially if you want those Instagram worthy pictures. You can also enjoy the cooler temperatures during that time as well. Hiking season is usually mid spring till late fall but check with the reservation system.

Come Prepared.

Being prepared for this hike is essential. Make sure to have proper footwear that includes sturdy, hiking shoes for the rocky terrain. There is no drinkable water on the trail so bring plenty of your own to stay hydrated, and a few snacks couldn’t hurt as well. The sun can be intense at higher altitudes so don’t forget your sunscreen and maybe even a sun hat. And remember the Colorado mountain weather can change quickly so layered clothing is a smart idea.

*Check Trail Status.

The trail in summer 2025 has been undergoing reconstruction, so check the trail status in case of intermittent closures that may affect your hike.

The nearby town of Glenwood Springs offers a variety of attractions for post relaxation and adventure.

Dinner Downtown

After your adventures for the day, grab dinner downtown whether it be something fancy or just a beer and hearty pub food from Glenwood Canyon Brew Pub.

Soak the Soles

No hike or visit to Glenwood Canyon would be complete without a soak in the Glenwood Springs Hot Springs. These healing waters will soothe your soul and soles, and make for a perfect ending to an adventurous day.
